schwinnWriting Workshops

The "strategies for pain-free academic writing" workshop has been offered every Fall since 2008 for thesis-writing undergraduates and grad students at Laurentian. Every year folks who can't attend and ask for any notes to be made available. Here are the Powerpoint Slides. Somewhat embarrassingly for me, but perhaps usefully for you, there is also a video recording of the 2008 workshop on strategy and "units," posted in five parts. It does not directly track the more recent powerpoint slides, but some people have still found it useful.

There will be three sessions in the 2011-12 school year - Pain-free academic writing 1 (on strategy), 2 (on procrastination), and 3 (on revision and the craft of writing).

And here are some useful links I mention in the presentation - there are many more besides these (and I welcome you to email me if you have suggestions for additions):

An excellent annotated list of resources from UCSB

Eight useful suggestions from a professional

An excellent expository discussion that covers much of the terrain in my workshop

Dissertation  Diva

I also mentioned a number of time-management books useful for academics:

Advice for New Faculty Members, by Robert Boice
The Now Habit: A Strategic Program for Overcoming Procrastination and Enjoying Guilt-Free Play, by Neil Fiore
Do It Tomorrow and Other Secrets of Time Management, by Mark Forster
